ES02 English Proficiency Certificate
Benefits:
- Improve oral and written English communication skills to prepare for college-level study
- Have the option to complete the ES02 Certificate and an Associate’s Degree at the same time

- May apply for federal and NYS financial aid to help pay for courses
(Note: Not all students are eligible to receive financial aid.)
Entry Requirements:
- After applying to MCC, take the CELSA placement test and score low advanced.
- Students who score high intermediate will complete the noncredit Strong Foundations ESOL program or take ESL 100 and ESL 120 credit classes in their first semester and are eligible to start the ES02 Certificate in their second semester.
Program Format:
- 32-35 credits, which can be completed in 3 full-time or 5 part-time semesters
- Most classes meet in-person and on-campus only (only a few classes have online options)

Description
The ESOL English Proficiency Certificate is for non-native English speakers who want to improve basic communication skills in English to prepare for college-level study, have more job opportunities, and develop a deeper awareness of American culture to better navigate academic and professional institutions. Students may complete the certificate full-time or part-time. This certificate also provides stackable credentials for those who wish to continue their education by pursuing a Liberal Arts and Sciences: General Studies A.S. (Housed in the ESOL Program, ESOL/TRS Department).
Program Learning Outcomes
1. Exhibit proficiency in practices of standard written English.
2. Identify areas of weakness in written work and revise for improvement.
3. Demonstrate basic oral communication skills.
4. Apply techniques and strategies to begin to self-correct pronunciation errors.
